Living with a chronic digestive condition like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can be overwhelming. The discomfort of symptoms like pain, bloating, or unpredictable bowel movements often leads to stress and anxiety — and, in turn, stress can make symptoms worse. This mind-gut connection has led many to explore complementary therapies, such as gut-directed hypnotherapy and Havening Techniques®, as part of a therapeutic approach to managing these conditions.
Gut-directed hypnotherapy (GDH) is a well-established approach for IBS. In a relaxed, focused state, the mind becomes more receptive to helpful suggestions. As a registered clinical hypnotherapist, I use gentle imagery — alongside, supportive messages aimed at calming the digestive system. These sessions aim to reduce gut sensitivity, improve motility, and ease symptoms like pain, bloating, and irregular bowel habits. Research shows GDH can be as effective as dietary changes (like the low FODMAP diet) in reducing IBS symptoms. Even better, the benefits can last for years after completing therapy.

Havening is a newer mind-body technique that uses soothing touch, visualization, and affirmations to help the brain process and release distress linked to past trauma or chronic stress. Havening can be useful in easing anxiety related to symptoms, medical procedures, or flare-ups. By helping to calm the nervous system, Havening may reduce the indirect impact of stress on gut health.

Complementary therapies like hypnotherapy and Havening may be worth exploring if:
Remember, these techniques do not replace medical treatments. They are best used as part of a comprehensive plan, alongside medication, dietary strategies, and medical supervision.
While hypnosis and Havening won’t cure IBS or IBD, they can offer meaningful support. By calming the mind and reducing the impact of stress, these therapies can help improve your quality of life and provide a greater sense of control over your condition.
I have worked with a number of clients who have found either hypnotherapy and Havening, or a combination of the two extremely powerful and effective. If you’re curious, just give me a call and I can discuss whether these approaches could be a good fit for you.

This paper outlines the theoretical neurobiological model behind Havening, focusing on how touch and visualization may alter distressing memories at the neurochemical level.
